Live action Dumbo

Postby calisota » Thu Mar 28, 2019 12:15 pm

This opens here today but I'm really torn as to whether I want to go and see it.

Anyone seen it and can offer an opinion.

Or haven't seen it and can still offer an opinion. :-)

I haven't seen it as yet but have heard good and bad reviews, largely good ones.  At least one bad review didn't like that there are people in it, so I guess it depends what you liked most about the original.  I'm planning to go with a friend in the next few weeks.
If you do go, let me know your thoughts on it!

I have seen a lot of reviews and it seems to be a real mixed bag. It may depend very much on your opinion of Tim Burton as much as anything else.

Shazam opens this week so I may be more inclined to see that rather than Dumbo.

I'll wait for the bluray as usual and watch it at home.  There is no 'must-see' feeling for this.

Shazam was good.

I still haven't seen Dumbo and doubt I'll be making any special effort. I am looking forward to The Lion King but have mixed feelings about Aladdin.

I'm concerned about Tim Burton's involvement as I'm not a fan of his work, however I'm going with a friend and her little girl tomorrow afternoon.  The ads make it look like my type of movie (as ads are designed to do).  Going by some reviews and taking into consideration I'm a crier, I'll have the tissues packed.
I'm mainly looking forward to Aladdin and Lion King because I love the music, however will see if I go or wait until they're out on DVD considering there's still Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2 this year.  Previously I only caught up on movies on planes when travelling or when they eventually came out on TV.  This year a Disney friend has been able to go to the cinema more so I've been going with her.  Fingers crossed!!

In terms of the crying - very well actually with only slightly damp eyes toward the end (no tissues required).  In terms of the movie - no sign of the Tim Burton I don't enjoy, just the good side.  I enjoyed the movie and I liked that it was it's own story while also holding true to the original just enough.  To me having people in it added new dimensions and provided a different slant to the storytelling giving this movie something different so I wouldn't say I have a preference - both versions have their place (in my opinion anyway).
Depending on the type of movie people like it's probably one that could wait for the small screen, but I'm still glad I saw it at the cinema where I have nothing else to focus on.  I'm an over thinker but have trouble concentrating which is why I think movies on a plane work well for me if I don't see them at the cinema - easier to get engrossed and not be side tracked.
Lovely movie if you have the time to see it.

Thanks Karen - that's probably the best non-spoiler review I've read!

Haha, sorry I was trying to be neutral which is why I added it could wait for the small screen …… depending what you enjoy.  I love feel good movies.

So, Thursday (which is my normal movie day) I have to decide between Dumbo and Avengers: Endgame. To be honest it's a pretty easy decision. :-)
