Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland

We saw Valentine's Day last weekend too. I found it entertaining - light and fluffy, but not very emotional.

...and there were no helicopters, cars chases, or explosions (I didn't realise Hollywood made pictures without those things...)

I've read a lot of mixed reviews for this but I have to say, in no way did I feel let down by the hype of this movie. It was amazing!!! -/ -/ -/

ok...

well, to start with... loved it loved it loved it!

I didn't get to see this in 3D ( The local cinema doesn't do 3D) but am definitely venturing further afield to do so before long.
I'd read that the plot was a little lack lustre but I didn't think that at all, watching Alice struggle with being back in Underland and not believing what she saw as real was well handled, particularly by the other inhabitants that were convinced that she was the 'wrong' alice. I had no problem with her rediscovery of her 'muchness'. I LOVED mr.Depp as could have been predicted, but wasn't prepared to love some of the other characters as much... LOVED the mad march hare, and especially the feisty door mouse(he slept his way through the original so it was interesting he was a 'warrior mouse' - even if it was a little reminiscent of the mouse in Prince Caspian). The Tweedles were exactly as I expected - funny - and it was weird hearing Snapes voice coming out of the caterpiller. Was disappointed with the White Queen but the Red Queen was deliciously self serving.
Visually, there was so very much to see that I need to watch it again to see what I missed.

All in all.... 4 stars out of a possible 5... Visual feast, great cast, nicely handled extension of timeless tale.

I also thought the movie was good. It was certainly visually amazing, and a much better story than the original cartoon Alice.

At times, it felt a little manic, hurried and crazy but I guess that is the nature of Wonderland/Underland, and then there were times that things seemed a little slow.

Della really enjoyed it - more so than I did I think. I just feel there was something lacking but maybe it was just the pacing, I'm not sure. When I see it again I'll probably think it is much better!

Don't get me wrong though - this is a good Disney movie - and very Tim Burtonish.

I did see the 3D version and once again the effect is terrific. There were a few more obvious attempts to throw things at you in this film and that added to the manickness (is that a word? ).

I thought Mia Wasikowska as Alice was believable as she struggled with her dreams - she carried that movie effortlessly and I hope we see a lot more of her in the future. And yes, we laughed at Alan Rickman as the caterpillar - he was channeling his Snape voice!

I didn't mind the White Queen - I thought that scene when she was making the potions was hilarious - here is the perfect, nice as pie, Queen - making potions out of completely horrid ingredients, and topping it off by spitting in it - that was hilarious!

The Tweedles were great - they always annoyed me in the cartoon (and at the parks) but these two were great.

And the soundtrack by Danny Elfman is brilliant.

Looking forward to see how the rest of the world warms to this film - the box office takings should be available Monday - Disney really need a hit as it has been a long time since they've had substantial box office numbers - I think this movie should provide it for them. At the end of the film yesterday, most people leaving the cinema seemed to have enjoyed it.

you are right of course Keith, it was manic and hurried but for some reason I was expecting that so it kind of flowed as I had pictured it so I didn't realise it until the slow bits hit and the whole cinema full of people suddenly remembered to breathe and collectively exhaled and each and every one of them reached for the snacks in those moments and the 'rustle' factor rose significantly then

Oops... I hadn't even mentioned 'our' Mia ... she was just.... Alice... ( and a wonderful one at that)

Great movie, looking forward to seeing it again.

That's funny - I noticed the exact same thing

And the movie made a motza at the box office over the weekend - over $115 million USD! Those numbers will be making Bob Iger smile - and somewhere in LA, I can just see Dick Cook saying "I told you so..."

We went and saw it last weekend in 3D, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the pace of the film actually made it. As a fantasy film it had everything you want; bizarre but fascinating characters, a setting that was totally immersible, action, humour, fun, a classic good V evil and it even threw in a little bit of "double agent" twists as well which was unexpected. I was initially a little confused when Depp dropped into his Captain Jack voice and accent, but then quickly worked out what was happening. I was even impressed with the back story around the proposal, Burton worked that in very well.

But my favourite bit was the end. I so much wanted one of the other ships in Dock to called Magic or Dream . The 3D box with the growing flowers at the start of the credits was a work of art, totally engrossing wasn't it?

At a recent gathering I asked the people there what they thought of the new Alice movie and was really surprised by the 'loved it:so-so' ratio amongst them. The people I was sure would love it were in the so-so camp and vice versa. Very Alice in Wonderland topsy turvy, huh?

I think that is what Burton movies do though Lisa. He tends to polarise audience's opinions and does not appeal to everyone. I think that is why he is so good, and when you look at the great movie makers over time, they do that. Tarantino was the same. Hmm, imagine if Tarantino had made this movie ...?

Alice would have just told her fiance to umm... take off... and all the inhabitants of Underland would have poured out the rabbit hole in reverse cursing, shooting things and then who knows what else. It would have gone some weird/violent places.

actually, if I were being truthful, I'd have to say it was luck... but contrarywise.... theres a small possibility it was a flash of brilliance from my subconscious right?
