Oops - looks like the Wall Street Journal broke the embargo on tonight's press conference by publishing the press release!
Here are the details - sadly there does not appear to be an opening date yet, they are still saying spring 2016 (maybe we'll still get that tonight?) but there are lots of new details for Shanghai listed below!
[From the Wall Street Journal]
Shanghai Disneyland will feature new “Star Wars” and Marvel experiences along with six themed areas that combine classic Disney brands with new ones.
In a major unveiling in China Wednesday (July 15), Disney chief executive Robert Iger gave details about the major areas and attractions that will be at the company’s sixth theme park, scheduled to open next spring.
The six areas of Shanghai Disneyland will be:
Mickey Avenue: The main entrance to the park, with designs inspired by Mickey Mouse and other cartoon characters, as well as meet-and-greets with employees dressed up as them.
Gardens of Imagination: An area focused on “the wonders of nature and the joy of imagination.” It will feature the classic Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride that has been at Disneyland in California since soon after it opened, as well as a Fantasia-inspired carousel.
Fantasyland: There is a Fantasyland at every Disney theme park and Shanghai will be no different. This one will have a new version of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train that recently opened in Orlando, as well as Peter Pan’s Flight, and will be home to the Enchanted Storybook Castle, which will sit at the center of the park and celebrates all of Disney’s princesses, rather than just one, as has been done at other parks. A new ride called Voyage to the Crystal Grotto will have its finale underneath the castle.
Adventure Isle: Includes more fast-paced rides like Roaring Rapids, as well as a “Soaring Over the Horizon” experience, based on “Soarin’ Over California” at California Adventure, that will give visitors the experience of flying around the world.
Treasure Cove: A pirates-themed area based on the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films (that were themselves based on a Disneyland ride). It will feature a new “Pirates” attraction, as well as a pirate ship for visitors to explore and a canoe ride.
Tomorrowland: Another Disney classic that can be found at most of its other parks. The science-fiction themed area will have new Buzz Lightyear attraction, a fast-paced Tron coaster, and a jet pack flying simulation.
In addition, close to Tomorrowland, Shanghai Disneyland will have the new Star Wars Launch Bay and Marvel Universe. Neither is scheduled to include a major new attraction, but they will feature sets, props, memorabilia, and other experiences to immerse visitors in two of the company’s newest and most valuable franchises that will be driving new movies and other content for many years to come.
Shanghai Disneyland will also feature Garden of the Twelve Friends, in which animals of the Chinese Zodiac are re-interpreted as Disney and Pixar animated characters, and a Mandarin-language production of the “Lion King” musical
